Who we are:
The Ya-Ya Network is a citywide anti-racist, anti-sexist organization and allies with the LGBTQ community. Ya-Ya is staffed by young activists ages 15-19. We work with other youth, adult allies, youth programs & activist organizations. We help groups & individuals connect. We share information & resources & we support the work that other groups are doing. All to build a stronger voice for young people in the movement for social & economic justice.
The Staff at Ya-Ya work together for 14 months, beginning each July. If you are interested in applying, click here.
What we do:
We are currently one of the few groups made up primarily of youth of color who are active in the counter-military recruitment movement.
*We lead workshops and trainings to make sure our peers get accurate information, not just a recruiter’s sales pitch.
*We help other youth groups and schools set up their own counter recruitment campaigns.
*We do research and produce written material and fliers that you can download here.
*We are working with a coalition of students, teachers and parents to get the New York City Department of Education to implement a city-wide policy limiting recruiter access to our schools.
*We hold an annual “Alternatives to the Military” career fair, giving students access to employers, colleges, trade schools, free job training programs, travel/service programs, financial aid, etc.
*We help young people who have joined the military under the delayed entry program, but have changed their minds and no longer want to go.
*We help people who are being harassed by recruiters or who want to do something about recruiter misconduct.
If you want to learn more about counter recruiting, facts about joining the military, alternative ways to meet your goals etc. or if you need help dealing with a recruiter who is hassling you or you want to get out of the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) click here.
